Botanical Traditions - Domestic Residence

The site is located in an inner eastern suburb of Melbourne. The project included the design of the courtyrad area including the paving, feature wall and fences and detailed design of the planting scheme, irrigation, and lighting. The back garden is viewed from the entertainment area, kitchen and study. The clients wanted to maximise the paved area while still maintaining visual interest. This was acheived by using an unusual paving shape and constructing the paving out slate and concrete pavers.

The hour glass paving shape holds a water feature. This water feature has been located off centre so that pedestrian movement within the garden is not compremised. The water feature was custom designed specifically for this garden and can be viewed from many different angles. Even when the water feature is not on the slate and stainless steel combination forms an architectural element in the garden.

The planting in this garden is an integral part of the design. Although containing a limited number of plants each one has been chosen with regards to its texture, colour and form and carefully positioned so that these characteristics can be fully appreciated. There are both exotic, indigenous and native drought hardy species of plants used in this garden.

The planting gives the garden an almost fluid characteristic, the garden changes almost daily.
