What is a Preliminary Plan?

The preliminary plan is the second step in the landscape design process. A preliminary plan takes the concept plan and further resolves the design. Typically at the preliminary plan stage the basic construction elements begin to come together - the focus is on the main elelments within the landscape design. The list of materials may also be resolved in the phase of the project. Most residential designs are taken to this level. This enables clients to contact contractors and obtain quotes.

The level of detail in a preliminary plan will vary depending on the project, budget and landscape designer. The plan below is for a simple backgarden in Melbourne. It includes the indicative structure of steps which were an important element within this design.
